Individual Responsibility and Accountability

All employees and students are responsible for working and acting safely. Specific responsibilities include:

  • taking reasonable care of their safety and health and that of co-workers, students and visitors
  • cooperating with the implementation and administration of University safety policies, procedures and guidelines
  • observing all instructions and rules issued to protect their safety and health and that of others
  • using plant and equipment as instructed by their supervisor
  • making proper use of all safeguards, safety devices, personal protective equipment and other appliances for safety purposes
  • using protective equipment and wearing personal protective clothing as instructed
  • seeking information or advice regarding hazards and procedures where necessary before carrying out new or unfamiliar work
  • being familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures and the location of first aid kits, personnel and emergency equipment, and if appropriately trained, using emergency equipment
  • reporting all incidents, injuries, near misses and hazards to their supervisor.

Emergency Evacuation Procedure

On hearing the evacuation alarm each person is responsible as follows:

  • Immediately cease all activities and collect hand-held personal belongings
  • Close office door behind you or lock computers if at a workstation
  • Walk quickly and calmly as directed to the designated assembly area at the Human Movement Oval
  • Remain at the assembly area until otherwise instructed.

People in teaching venues are responsible for directing students as follows on hearing the evacuation alarm:

  • Immediately cease all activities and collect hand-held personal belongings
  • Turn off any electrical devices
  • In controlled sequence, move along gangway to main aisles and exit in orderly manner through nearest exits
  • Walk quickly and calmly as directed to the designated assembly area at the Human Movement Oval
  • Remain at the assembly area until otherwise instructed.

Note that no person is to re-enter the building until the Building Warden gives the all clear.

Emergency Exits

Emergency exits are located at each corner of the building next to the kitchenettes and toilets as well as both ground floor entrances to the building.

Assembly points

West wing: Kimberley (Green) and Wheatbelt (Yellow) to assemble at oval adjacent to Human Movement.
East wing: Goldfields (Red) and Pilbara (Orange) to exit and move along path in front of building to assemble at oval adjacent to Human Movement.

UWA is Smoke Free

To protect the health and wellbeing of its staff, students and visitors, The University of Western Australia became smoke free on 1 January 2012. Smoking is prohibited in, or at, all of the University’s buildings, properties and workplaces.

Security escorts are provided after hours to escort individuals to carparks, colleges and accommodation immediately adjacent to the University. If required, please contact Security on 6488 3020 half an hour prior to your departure and a uniformed officer will respond.
