Policies, exams and assessments


The operation of the University is governed by a range of Commonwealth and State legislation and by the University’s statutes, by-laws, regulations, rules and policies.

Academic conduct

The University of Western Australia takes the matter of academic misconduct by students very seriously and has policies in place that define misconduct (including plagiarism) and the penalties that apply. The consequences for misconduct can be severe, including exclusion from the University.

All students are expected to be aware of the definitions and the policies relating to academic misconduct and any additional requirements or stipulations that may be provided by individual coordinators.

Approved leave

If you are planning to take time off, and are not enrolled for any part of an academic year, you will need to apply for approved leave. To apply, you will need to submit an application online via studentConnect.

Assignment cover sheets

Assignment submission dates and times can be found in your respective unit outlines under ‘Assessments’. If you are required to submit a hard copy of your assignment, please attach the assignment cover sheet. If your assignment is being submitted through LMS or Uniprint, you are not required to attach a cover sheet.

Calculator Policy

The University policy on assessments (28.5) outlines the type of calculators that can be used in examination venues. Basically, programmable calculators, graphics calculators and calculators that have the capability to communicate with other devices are not permitted in UWA tests and exams.

The calculator you use for exams must have an “Approved Calculator” sticker that you can obtain from the Business School Student Centre. Calculators without the Faculty’s “Approved Calculator” sticker cannot be taken into any examination or test. These stickers cannot be removed and placed onto another calculator. Alternatively, you can purchase pre-approved/pre-stickered calculators from the Co-Op Bookshop on campus.

University Charter of Student Rights and Responsibilities

The University Charter of Student Rights and Responsibilities sets out the fundamental rights and responsibilities of students and their organisations at The University of Western Australia.

The Charter also recognises that students are central to a dynamic University community. In doing so, the University recognises the importance of student rights, responsibilities and opinion and encourages diversity within the student body.

Complaints

Students who are concerned about the quality of teaching, supervision, administrative processes, conduct of staff or other students can submit a complaint to the Complaint Resolution Unit.

Credit for previous study

If you wish to receive credit towards your current degree based on previous study, either from UWA or another approved institution, you will need to apply for advanced standing. Submit your completed advanced standing form along with transcripts (if not from UWA) to the Business School Student Centre for consideration.

Exams and deferred exams

You are responsible for checking when and where your exams are held. For midsemester exams, the information will generally be made available via LMS. For final exams, the exam timetable will be made available on studentConnect. Student Administration also provides detailed information on exams, assessments and results.
Deferred exams
You can apply for a deferred exam under the special consideration policy if you have been severely affected by an illness or factors outside your control.
Past exam papers
Past exam papers are available to staff and students via OneSearch.

Reviews and appeals

If you are dissatisfied with an assessment result or your progress status at the University, you are entitled to request a review of the academic decision relating to you, and to appeal if you are dissatisfied with the outcome of that review. The appeal must demonstrate that the assessment of academic performance for the unit(s) is incorrect or unfair.

You should first contact the lecturer concerned and request a review of the decision made in a timely manner from the notification of results. If the review is not satisfactorily resolved, you should then make an appointment with the Sub-Dean.

Special Consideration

You can apply for special consideration if you believe your study has been severely affected by an illness or other factors outside your control. To apply, you must submit a special consideration form to the Business School Student Centre within three university working days after the assessment due date.
