The Business School research development scheme aims to support Business School researchers by means of research project grants of limited scope and duration. $100,000 is set aside in2009 for this scheme. Applications close Friday 11 September 2009.

Business School Established Researcher "Best Paper" Prizes - 2008 publications. Close 14 August 2009.
The Dean of the Business School has established up to four annual "best paper" prizes to recognise and reward research excellence amongst staff in the School. The prizes will be awarded to staff for scholarly articles published in the previous year. The current value of each prize is $2,500.

Ahern Early Career Portfolio prize. Close 24 July 2009.
The Ahern Family Awards have been set up to promote and encourage excellent scholarship among Early Career Researchers in the UWA Business School. The Research Portfolio prize recognizes quality research activity relative to opportunity. The current value of each prize is $2,500.

Ahern Early Career Grant application incentives - ongoing
Each ECR applying for a competitive external grant of at least $10,000 in 2008 will be eligible for an incentive prize of $1000

ARC Linkage grant application support - ongoing
Business School  seed funding to help staff with ARC Linkage and other external competitive grant applications in 2008. Up to $1000 is available.

For Early Career Researchers:

The UWA Research Development Award scheme (UWARDS) - close 11 July 2008

The UWA Research Development Award scheme is designed to provide an opportunity for early career researchers to develop grant application and research skills that can be built on for future research projects and to build track records for external grant competitiveness. It replaces the UWA Research Grants scheme.  You can ask for up to $30,000 plus up to $14,500 for teaching relief. (ECR = PhD awarded after 31 December 2002).Closes 11 July 2008.

Developing partnerships for ARC linkage project - ongoing
Up to $1500 to support activities that will encourage and support research collaborations.

The UWA research grants scheme is a great opportunity in particular for Early Career Researchers (those who have achieved PhD within the last five years). This is a one year grant to a maximum of $30,000. Applications close in early July.

A range of other internal funding schemes are also available.

External

The Australian Research Council (ARC) grants include:
  • Discovery (fundamental research)
  • Linkage (collaborative research with industry)
  • Federation Fellowships (designed to attract to Australia and retain outstanding researchers)

... and various other supportive schemes. The purpose of these schemes is to:

  • support excellent fundamental research by individuals and teams
  • help researchers to undertake their research in conditions most conducive to achieving excellent results
  • encourage research training in high-quality research environments
  • develop and maintain a broad foundation of high-quality world-class research across a wide range of disciplines.
The National Competitive grants comprise a range of grants from:
  • the Commonwealth Government (for example, Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, CSIRO, Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Health and Aging, Dept of Defence)
  • other sources (such as Australian Rotary Health Research Fund, the Diabetes Australia Research Trust, the National Food Industry Strategy: Food Centres of Excellence).
