Master of Human Resources and Employment Relations

Completing postgraduate studies in Human Resources and Employment Relations (HR & ER) will provide you with a thorough theoretical and practical grounding in the management of people and employment in Australia and overseas.

HR & ER explores how the proper management of employees contributes towards organisational effectiveness, asking questions such as:

  • How do we find the right employees?
  • How do we keep them?
  • How do we motivate employees to maximise their performance?
  • How do we assess employee performance?

In addition, HR & ER examines the organisation of work, management of employees, role of unions, development of co-operation and negotiation, and ways in which conflict can emerge and be managed.

The Master of Human Resources and Employment Relations is accredited by the Australian Human Resources Institute.

Course information

Course structure

As a Master of Human Resources and Employment Relations student, you will complete between 12 and 16 units, depending on your prior studies.

Students who have not completed a Bachelor of Commerce or a bachelor's degree majoring in employment relations and/or human resources may be required to complete relevant conversion units up to the value of four units, as advised by the Faculty.

Career options

Our graduates are employed in all areas of the private and public sectors in an array of jobs. Many work in general human resources managerial and consulting roles, while others are employed in more specialised positions in policy development, industrial relations, recruitment and assessment, and equal opportunity.

Graduates who meet the requisite work experience requirements are eligible for direct entry into the Unit 4 Capstone: Applied Project in Organisational Capability of the AHRI Practising Certification (APC) Program. Completion of the Capstone project will award AHRI certification, CAHRI-CP.

Admission requirements

All students must meet UWA’s English language competency requirements.
To be eligible for admission, you must meet the following requirements:

Pathway One
  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent as recognised by UWA; and
  • Any one of the following:
    • The equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 60 per cent; or
    • A valid Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of at least 550; or
    • At least five years of relevant documented professional experience considered by UWA to be sufficient to permit satisfactory completion of the course.

  • A Graduate Certificate in Business, or an equivalent accredited post-experience qualification, as recognised by UWA; with the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent.
